Curious

After the "suspension" gambit, this goes without much mention?
McCain's decision not to speak on the bill in the Senate chamber was odd for a candidate who took the legislation so seriously that he had suspended his campaign and suggested what became a bipartisan White House meeting on the matter.

  • I think Biden has a perfect opportunity in this debate to hammer McCain on the emptiness of his rhetoric on this "leader of the bail out" crap. Really, he's a demonstrable phony... from the WH meeting to the "phoning it in" to the "it Obama's fault", yada yada yada.

This way he's attacking McCain directly, and Palin only indirectly by association. Really. These assertions of the now-spastic, Tourette's suffering, McCain need to be answered by the Obama team.

  • Maybe. I think Biden's specified mission is to look competent and not give the other side anything to run with after the debate.

There may be a channel to launch on your attacks, but I don't think tonight is it.

  • Hmmm... You're probably right about keeping this debate as non-confrontational, boring, and uneventful as possible. Frankly that works to the advantage of both candidates, now that I think of it.

Palin has to come out not looking like and idiot and Biden has to come out not looking like an ass. I can't think of anything either candidate could do that would be "game changers." BUT, since Palin's been hold up at Camp Desperation and Sen. McSpastic has been taking wild potshots, who knows what spotlight-grabbing theatrics Palin might pull.

Still, raising questions about McCain's credibility would be fair game. And given the events of the past week, perfectly expected... I don't think it would rock the boat with the electorate (or the polls).

  • Right. All the potential is for downside for both. They can't win the election here, but they could certainly cause alot of problems for their ticket.

Palin could arguably gain a little in her image, but I don't think that's 5-8 points in the polls.

And, on Biden, why even risk rocking the boat when everything is breaking your way?

Even if her performance tonight does affect the polls (3-4pts) I don't think it's sustainable. This is the only VP debate and there's still 4+ weeks 'til the election. What're the doing to do? Put her back in a box?
